Chapter Fourteen - Sunlight
Bane buried his face in Nick’s hair. He took in deep breaths of his mate’s scent. A shiver of pleasure and rightness ran through him. Not touching Nick, not having Nick’s scent in his nose, and not feeling Nick’s love had been agonizing.
“My Nick,” he whispered.
Mate, the spirit murmured.
“I missed you so much. Even though we were together, it felt like … well, seeing you and not being able to be with you was -- was awful.” Nick laughed. “Damn, I’m not saying this right.”
“Everything is right now that you are in my arms. That’s all that counts.”
The spirit did a little spin of delight in his chest. It made him laugh out loud to see the massive tiger dancing about like a kitten.
“What are you laughing about, huh?” Nick affectionately kissed his temple.
“The spirit is dancing. If only you could see him like I do now. Well, you will see him later. He promises to put on an encore performance for you,” Bane’s voice was thick with emotion. The spirit curled around his spine, loving him, loving Nick, and offering its soothing presence.
“I’d like to dance with you, too, Bane.” Nick gave him a slow sensual smile. His fingers were now in Bane’s hair, carding through it. “A slow dance under the moonlight?”
“You shall have whatever you want, Nick,” Bane promised.
“The way you say that sends shivers down my spine.”
Nick pulled back. It took all of Bane’s willpower not to draw him close again. He wanted to practically weld them together if he could. But Nick was insistent. His mate framed his face with his hands. Nick’s right thumb lightly brushed beneath the scar. His scar didn’t hurt. He hardly felt the burn mark at all.
“I want …” Nick paused and licked his lips.
Bane cocked his head to the side. “What do you want? I did mean it, Nick: whatever you want is yours.”
What could his mate want that he was too shy to ask for?
“I want you,” Nick answered in a throatier tone than his usual one.
“You have me,” Bane assured him.
A flush covered Nick’s cheeks, pinking his silken skin. “No, I mean ... in a physical way, Bane.”
The spirit’s tail which had been thumping with happiness froze in mid-air. Bane, too, froze, not certain he understood what Nick was asking for. He had expected his mate to be tentative with him, wanting to re-establish their relationship slowly with Bane having to earn every kiss, touch and pet. He expressed this to Nick in halting sentences.
Nick grinned. “Oh, I’ll want the you-earning-it-part with romance and all that! I can’t wait for it, actually. But …” Nick’s expression went serious and he curled one hand along Bane’s powerful jaw. “But thinking we weren’t going to be together just about killed me. So I need to know you’re mine and I’m yours.”
“How would we do that?” Bane murmured. His hands slid around Nick’s waist.
“Now that I know about the spirit and you know he’s not going to hurt me .
